A smart lock is a motor attached to a mechanism designed for a hand. A hand unconsciously lifts a sticking door or leans on it; a motor pushes until it stops. Almost everything distinctive about living with a smart lock follows from that difference.

Three measurements decide it, and all three are worth taking before choosing a product.
The door thickness, because every lock states a range it fits. The backset, meaning the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the hole. And the existing hardware, since some locks replace the whole assembly and others replace only the interior side and keep your existing exterior cylinder and key.
Beyond measurement, the door's condition matters more than any specification. A door that needs a shoulder in damp weather, or a bolt that needs a lift to travel, is a door where a motor will struggle — because it will meet that resistance on every cycle and has no shoulder to offer.
Testing the bolt by hand with the door closed, and noticing whether it moves freely, is the most informative thing anyone can do before buying.

Every product has an answer to this, and knowing yours before it matters is the point.
Most give considerable warning — app notifications for weeks, then audible warnings at the door. Most also provide a backup: a physical key, contacts on the outside that accept a battery held against them, or a mechanical override.
What varies is whether the backup is something you have with you. A lock whose backup is a physical key is only useful if somebody carries one, which is often precisely what a smart lock was bought to avoid.
Two habits make this a non-issue: replacing batteries on a schedule rather than on a warning, and keeping a key somewhere reachable that is not inside the locked house.

Watching whether your phone has crossed a boundary drawn around your home, and unlocking when it decides you have arrived.
It is the feature people most enjoy and the one worth thinking hardest about. The boundary is generally wider than intended, because phone location is approximate and a tight radius triggers unreliably. Wide boundaries mean a door that may unlock while you are still some way off.
Most implementations add a second condition — the phone must have been genuinely away, not merely in the garden — which handles the obvious cases. Whether the remaining behavior suits your street is a judgment only you can make, and it is a setting rather than a fixture.

A keypad lock stores several codes rather than one, and each can carry conditions.
A permanent code for the household. A recurring code for a cleaner, valid on particular days and hours. A one-time code for a delivery, which stops working after a single use. An expiring code for a visitor staying a fortnight.
The value is that access can be granted without handing over a key and withdrawn without changing a lock. The discipline it requires is a record of what has been issued and to whom, because codes are easy to create and easy to forget. Home insurance policies frequently specify a lock standard for exterior doors, and a smart lock that does not meet that standard can affect a claim regardless of how secure it feels. Some insurers are entirely comfortable with them, some require particular certifications, and some care only about the mechanical lock and treat the smart part as irrelevant.
A short call or email before buying settles it, and the answer is worth having in writing.

Then the question is permission, and the practical answer is usually a lock that changes nothing permanent.
Products that replace only the interior side of an existing deadbolt leave the exterior cylinder and the keys exactly as they were, which means the original key still works, the landlord's access is unaffected, and the whole thing reverses in ten minutes when you leave.
Anything replacing the full assembly changes the lock on the property and is a conversation to have first rather than after. Keeping the original hardware in a box is sensible either way.

Almost always, and this is worth confirming for any specific product before buying.
Most smart locks retain a thumbturn on the inside and a key or keypad outside, meaning the door works exactly as it did for anyone who ignores the app entirely. That matters in a household where not everyone wants an app, and it matters when a phone battery is dead.
Products that remove the mechanical path altogether exist and are a different proposition. Neither is wrong; the difference should be a decision rather than a discovery.

Locks differ from most smart devices here, and for a good reason.
Many use a low-power protocol rather than Wi-Fi, because a Wi-Fi radio would drain batteries in weeks. That means a bridge or hub is needed for anything remote — checking whether the door is locked from elsewhere, or letting someone in while you are out.
Without that bridge, the lock still works completely at the door: codes, thumbturn, keypad, everything local. What you lose is remote visibility.
The other network fact worth knowing: a lock stores the network details it was given, so changing your router or Wi-Fi password means the lock needs the new details before remote features return. The door itself is unaffected throughout.
