Almost every setup that stalls, stalls here. Not because the step is hard, but because home networks are more complicated than they look — two bands, sometimes two names, occasionally a guest network and an extender in the mix.
- Question 01How do I connect Alexa to Wi-Fi, in one paragraph?

You give the network name and password to the Alexa app, and the app passes them to the Echo, which joins the network by itself. You never type anything into the speaker. Everything happens on your phone, and the only genuinely delicate part is entering the password exactly right.
- Question 02What's the difference between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz?

Distance versus speed.
The 2.4 GHz band travels further and passes through walls and floors more easily, but carries less data and is more crowded — it's shared with microwave ovens, older cordless phones, and every neighbor's router.
The 5 GHz band carries much more data and is far less congested, but it fades quickly with distance and is noticeably weakened by solid walls.
For a laptop streaming video in the same room as the router, 5 GHz is better. For a speaker sitting in a kitchen at the other end of the house, 2.4 GHz is better, and that's what Echo devices are built around.
- Question 03Why do I see two network names that look almost the same?

Because many routers broadcast each band under its own name. You'll typically see something like Sharma-Home and Sharma-Home-5G.
They're the same internet connection, just two different radios. The one without the 5G suffix is the 2.4 GHz band, and that's generally the one to select for an Echo device.
Plenty of routers publish one name for both bands and allocate devices between them without telling anyone. In that case you'll see only one entry and there's no choice to make, which is simpler.
- Question 04What if I have a mesh system?

Mesh systems — a main unit plus satellite units placed around the house — almost always publish one network name covering the whole home, and manage the bands internally.
That means you'll see one entry in the list, you won't be offered a band choice, and the system will assign your Echo to whichever band it judges best. This works well in practice.
Some mesh systems offer per-device controls inside their own management app, separate from the Alexa app. Those controls are documented by the mesh manufacturer, not by Amazon.
- Question 05What about a Wi-Fi extender?

An extender is different from mesh, and the difference matters here.
A standalone extender usually creates a second network with its own name, often the original name with EXT or REPEATER added. Devices connected to the extender's network and devices connected to the router directly are, from a discovery point of view, on separate networks — which is why a phone on one and an Echo on the other sometimes can't find each other.
For setup, put the phone and the device on the same one. The main router network is the safer choice.
- Question 06Can I use my guest network?

You can connect to it, but it's usually a poor choice.
Guest networks typically isolate connected devices from each other by design — that's the point of them. A device on the guest network may join successfully and then be invisible to the app on your phone, and unable to work with other smart devices in the house.
Use your main network for anything you intend to keep.
- Question 07How exact does the password have to be?

Completely exact. Every character, including capitals.
Wi-Fi passwords are matched in full or rejected in full, and the failure message is never specific — it won't tell you that you got one character wrong. Type it manually rather than pasting, and use the show-password control to check it before continuing.
The characters that catch people out most often are zero against capital O, the digit one against lowercase L and capital i, five against S, and eight against B. Router labels are printed small, and these pairs look nearly identical at that size.
Spaces are allowed in Wi-Fi passwords, and an invisible space copied from the end of an email is a classic reason a correct-looking password fails.

Why the password on the router label may be out of date
The printed label shows the password the router shipped with, not necessarily the one in use today. If anyone — an installer, a family member, you three years ago — changed it afterwards, the label is a historical record rather than a current fact.
The current password lives in the router's own settings, reachable through the router manufacturer's app or its admin page, or with whoever made the change.
- Question 08Can an Echo join a hidden network?

Yes, though it's less convenient. A hidden network doesn't broadcast its name, so it won't appear in any list of nearby networks — it has to be entered manually, spelled exactly as configured, including capitals.
Hiding a network offers very little real security, since the network is still detectable by anyone with the right tools. It mainly creates work when adding new devices.
- Question 09What about hotel, dorm, or café Wi-Fi?

These usually don't work, and the reason is worth understanding.
Public networks generally use a captive portal — the page that appears asking you to accept terms, enter a room number, or click Connect before internet access is granted. Accepting those terms requires a web browser, and an Echo device doesn't have one.
Networks that use a username and password, common in universities, present a similar barrier.
This is a property of how those networks authenticate, not a fault in the device. Some venues offer a separate device-registration process for exactly this reason; the venue's IT desk is the party who would know.
- Question 10Does moving house mean setting everything up again?

Not from scratch, but the network details do have to be updated.
The device stores the network name and password it was given. In a new home with a different network, those stored details are wrong, so the device can't connect. It's still registered to your account, still named, still in its room — it simply can't find the network it's looking for.
The Alexa app has a Wi-Fi settings area for updating a device's network details without removing and re-adding it. The same applies when you switch internet providers and a new router arrives.
